Metal Stamping Explained: From Sheet Metal to Production Parts

Metal stamping is a high-speed manufacturing process that transforms flat sheet metal into consistent, production-ready components using engineered dies and stamping presses.
The process can combine multiple operations, including blanking, piercing, bending, drawing, coining, and trimming, to produce complex parts with repeatable quality and competitive piece costs.
The stamping process begins with engineering the right tooling strategy based on part geometry, material, production volume, and tolerances. Sheet or coil material is then accurately fed into the press, where a sequence of cutting and forming operations creates the required features and final shape.
Common stamping operations include:
Blanking – Creates the overall outside profile of the part.
Piercing – Produces holes, slots, and other openings.
Bending – Forms sheet metal into specific angles and shapes.
Drawing – Creates deeper, three-dimensional components.
Coining – Forms precise localized features through high-pressure forming.
Trimming – Removes excess material to achieve the final geometry.
Manufacturers use metal stamping because it can deliver high production speeds, repeatable quality, lower piece costs at the right volumes, complex features, reduced handling, and scalable production.
Choosing the right stamping method depends on the part and production requirements. Progressive dies are well suited for high-volume repeatable parts, and transfer stamping is commonly used for larger or deeper formed components, while single-hit or line dies can be effective for simpler parts and lower-volume production.
At MTD Metro Tool & Die Ltd., our stamping capabilities include mechanical presses up to 800 tons, including a 660-ton SIMPAC press, supported by in-house tool and die capabilities. Our team can support projects from tooling design and build through stamping, fabrication, welding, powder coating, assembly, and inspection.
Metal stamping is more than simply pressing sheet metal. The right tooling strategy, equipment, process control, and inspection are essential to producing reliable parts at production scale.
From tool design to production. Built for repeatability. Built for production.
